Stitch Holiday Hounds, a counted cross stitch kit by Bothy Threads — a row of dogs, including a Dalmatian and a scruffy terrier, line up in Santa hats, antlers, holly and cosy red jumpers.

A little stitcher's folklore: Dalmatians were bred as carriage dogs, trotting beside horse-drawn coaches to guard them.

Why this kit: based on original artwork by Karen Tye Bentley, it uses woolly Lana threads for fluffy hats and trims, with Velcro supplied to fluff them up.

Kit includes: 14-count winter blue Zweigart Aida, pre-sorted stranded cottons, woolly Lana threads, snowflake sequins, beads, Velcro for fluffing the Lana threads, needles and a clear stitch diagram and instructions. Stitches used: cross stitch and back stitch. A frame is not included.

Stitch the dogs in cross stitch, add the outlines in back stitch, then work the Lana threads and fluff them with the Velcro before adding the beads and sequins.

Finished size: 39×16 cm (15.4×6.3 in). A long, cheerful panel for a mantelpiece or shelf.
